Stage lighting, when done right, can set the mood and tone throughout the theatre, playing on your audience's emotions, and powerfully driving your show or event forward. When done right. Lighting is not something you can play by ear if you plan on going for the maximum effect. Unfortunately, not everyone can afford a lighting technician -- and even if you can, do you know enough about how lighting works to understand what it is that technician is doing, at least from a high level? Can you direct him or her? Maybe not.
If you want to learn about stage lighting techniques, the On Stage Lighting blog is one of the best resources out there.
On Stage lighting is, in their own words:
"...dedicated to information about the technology, practices, and education in the world of stage, theatre and event lighting. A useful resource to help those new to lighting and hoping to gain more knowledge of the subject in theatre, corporate events or live concerts."
The site, though a little cluttered by advertising, and only periodically updated, features articles on stage, event, and theatre lighting that are friendly, well-written, and easy to understand. There are tutorials, helpful tips, and links to and reviews of learning resources such as books, software, and even iPhone apps that can help you design and control your event lighting.
Some of the posts on On Stage Lighting are very genre specific, which is helpful, educating readers on things like lighting techniques and best practices for dance productions, band gigs, and orchestras and choirs. These articles, as well as other topics can be easily found through the site's Latest, Popular, and Best Stuff tabs in the right sidebar, as well as through On Stage Lighting's built-in Google search.
If you are at all interested in learning about lighting for theatre shows and other kinds of events, On Stage Lighting should be one of your first stops.
