We're fans of kids at Terry Fox Theatre, and we believe in the power that music and the performing arts have on children and their development. We often have the pleasure of hosting events that feature or are specifically for children, ranging from recitals, to full productions, to series like Tiny Tots that bring interactive, educational play together with classical music.
Lisa and Linda, the magic behind Tiny Tots, have been working with symphony orchestras throughout the Pacific Northwest and Alberta -- including the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra -- to make classical music accessible and interesting to the minds of toddlers to four and five year olds, blending string quartets and more with engaging stories and games that invite the child to participate. The most recent installment of the four-part series took place over the Christmas holidays, featuring selections from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker and other sounds of the season. Kids were able to join in with the March of the Toys and play imaginary drums during the 1812 Overture. It was a blast!
Lisa and Linda are no strangers to bringing music to kids. Lisa G. Allison is an Elementary Music specialist for Lake Washington school district, and Linda Sebenius taught early childhood education programs for 15 years, including music-centric programs like Kindermusik and Musikgarten. The sisters come from a large and musical family, and have seven sons between them, and though both travelled separate paths for many years, they eventually came together to create Let Your Music Shine, which has led to award winning CDs, DVDs, and hundreds of performances.
The next Tiny Tots performance in Port Coquitlam, featuring the VSO, is based on Lisa and Linda's CD Garden Full of Songs. It features the works of Bela Bartok, engaging and involving children in the playful stories of Bela Bunny and Kitty Kitty. Don't miss it! Bring your kids down to Terry Fox Theatre this Saturday morning (February the 26th, 2011) for one of the two shows; one at 10AM, and another at 11:30AM. It's sure to be a lot of fun for everyone!
