Theatre is more than just a medium for entertainment. It's an expression of life, of self, of everything that makes us human. It's not always pretty, certainly, nor is it always happy -- but it is always inspiring.
What is it about theatre that captivates us? Why, in this era of home theatres, video games, and the internet, do we even bother to leave the house, let alone rub shoulders with strangers in the dark, watching people speak, sing, and dance on a stage? Why? Because theatre fulfils us in a way that none of those other things can -- even with next to no budget, no special and flashy effects, and nothing more than a single person and a chair on the stage, we can be inspired. Would you sit through a movie like that? Not likely. But a live show... you just might.
People have been drawn to theatre since ancient times. Before Sophocles brought the first great tragedies and comedies to life, even as far back as when humankind were still nomadic and tribal, there were performances of dance and music, of great stories of gods and monsters, and life lessons. Often, these performances would be less of a spectator driven event, and would instead involve everyone in the tribe, all doing their part to make up the greater whole of the performance. Perhaps that is why we're still drawn in by it. Perhaps we watch because it inspires us to do more, to be a part of it all. Perhaps it simply reconnects us with the simpler, more fundamental aspects of society.
Whatever the ultimate truth is about our love -- need -- for theatre, it will always challenge us, always bring to light the things in our societies and our lives that we may not be comfortable with, always make us think, laugh, cry, and yes, always entertain us as well. We should all spend a little more time at the theatre this year. And while a visit to any theatre will be a benefit, you may want to spare an extra thought or two for your local, community theatres -- because that's where the real magic began: community. And that's also where some of the greatest in tomorrow's best theatre shows will find their own beginnings.
Get inspired! Happy New Year!
